Dear mother nature, I am sorry we are failing you. I am sorry your ice caps are melting and your forests are being set aflame. I am sorry you are being flooded and your deserts are experiencing drought. I am sorry your coral is dying and the vast biodiversity you hold is being killed off- one species after another. I am sorry your most loyal protectors- indigenous people living off of your precious resources- are being impacted the most. I am sorry people who are capitalizing off of your resources are living a comfortable life. I am sorry global leaders all over the world are ignoring the most important issue facing us today. I am sorry we are in a climate crisis.

All across the world, all-time high temperatures were being reached due to man-made climate change. Sea levels are rising at an average of three millimetres per year. The average wildlife population has dropped by 60% in just over 40 years. The world is on course to warm by at least 1.5 degrees by the end of this century. This will have catastrophic impacts for both human civilisation and the rest of the natural world.

Greta Thunberg said ‘I want you to feel the fear I feel everyday. I want you to panic.’ The science is completely clear. It is time to act. We can’t sit by and let this happen. The UN says 11 years left. Real action needed to have started yesterday, but we can’t change our past so we must change our future.

We have been writing to our local MP and ministers for a long while, but more needs to be done. The UK government has declared a climate emergency thanks to pressure from people like us. Now we need to make sure they act on it. We bear the greater responsibility as a nation for our historical carbon emissions and must reduce our emissions, whilst supporting the most marginalised globally to adapt to climate change. We need everyone to take action individually, collectively, and as a nation, our government must step up to the task.
